When deciding to start a blog, picking a topic is a difficult decision. Many people decide to just write random articles about anything which interests them; this can be great for content, but very difficult to make money from.

When deciding your blog’s topic, it is always a good idea to pick something which interests you. If you try blogging about something which you have no interest in, sooner or later you will become bored of writing about the topic, particularly if you’re getting no benefit from it. 

There can be a lot of hard work involved in blogging, so if the blogger is not benefiting from their hard work, usually through making money, they will often lose interest and give up. This is one of the main reasons why it is important to choose a topic which interests you, rather than one which you think people want to read about.

Having a lot of expertise in your blog’s topic is also important, as you need to be able to write informative and interesting articles, otherwise you will struggle to attract readers. Additionally, if you lack knowledge on a particular topic, chances are you will run out of things to write about fairly quickly, and find yourself in a position where you need to spend time researching any topic before you can write an article.

Another thing to consider is whether the blog will be profitable. If the blog is monetised with Adsense, you should bear in mind that certain topics have higher earnings for each click than others. Entertainment blogs, for example, may be popular to write articles on, however the amount earned per click is fairly low. 

Blogs based around health, fitness, finance or technology usually earn a lot of money for each click, and can make a lot of money if they become popular. Often, several clicks on an entertainment blog will earn the blogger far less than a single click on a finance blog.

If you choose to write about a topic which has high earnings for each click, it is important to remember that it will be more difficult for you to attract visitors. The reason for this is that many others will have targeted the same topic, therefore your blog will be competing with many other blogs and websites.

The key to choosing a successful topic for your blog is getting the balance right. The topic needs to be one which interests you and you have some knowledge of, but at the same time it needs to be profitable enough to hold your interest, and give you some incentive to continue writing articles regularly. 

At the same time as being profitable, it needs to be a topic which has a low enough level of competition which allows your blog to actually be found by potential readers, rather than just being lost in a sea of websites which appear in the search results for a popular and competitive term.
